Xin named visiting professor for Chinese university’s Global Immersion program

Driven by the mission of sharing excellent international resources, China’s Southwest University (SWU) invited 44 world-class professors from around the world to teach its students during International Curriculum Week. Purdue University faculty member Yan Ping Xin was one of the 44 international faculty members SWU invited to be a visiting professor for its 2023 Summer Global Immersion Program in July.

Xin is a professor of Special Education, Department of Educational Studies, in Purdue’s College of Education; Xin is recognized in the field for her work in intervention research in mathematical problem-solving involving students with learning disabilities or difficulties.

These international visiting professors represented nine counties including the United States, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Serbia, South Africa, and Spain. Twenty-four of these visiting professors attended in-person to give face-to-face instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, while the other twenty professors delivered courses online.

Xin and the other visiting professors attended the opening ceremony of SWU’s Global Immersion program. SWU’s Foreign Affairs department administrators and secretaries, representatives from various college departments, and collaborative team teachers welcomed the visiting professors at the opening ceremony. The vice president, Yanqiang Cui, delivered a welcome speech and presented a Letter of Appointment to each visiting professor.

The visiting professors taught courses in education/special education, agriculture, artificial intelligence (AI), business and management, chemistry, engineering, foreign languages, geography, history, law, mathematics, music, material sciences, political science, psychology, and veterinary medicine.

Xin has long been involved in global engagement in learning, discovery, and services. For the past decade, she has hosted numerous international visiting scholars and mentored Chinese scholars in academic writing and conducting education research. Based on her observation of scholarly work in education/special education in China, Xin created a course for the Global Immersion program to specifically address the shortage of intervention research in Chinese education and to promote diverse students’ academic success in inclusive classrooms.

During Xin’s visit to SWU, she was invited to give a research talk to faculty and students addressing inclusive education and mathematics problem-solving intervention research.
