Dr. Signe Kastberg named Mary Endres Endowed Chair of Elementary Education

Signe Kastberg

Dr. Signe Kastberg, Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been selected by the Purdue University Board of Trustees as the Mary Endres Endowed Chair of Elementary Education. The position was formally ratified during the Trustees’ meeting on April 8.

Dr. Kastberg came to Purdue University as an associate professor in 2010 and was promoted to professor in 2017. As a scholar of teaching and learning, Dr. Kastberg explores and contributes to public understanding of mathematics teaching and learning and mathematics teacher education. Her discovery, learning, and engagement activities are undertaken to develop and contribute to understandings of the beauty and complexity of teaching, learning, and learning to teach mathematics-learners. Dr. Kastberg addresses the needs of at-risk English learners and provides recommendations for educating struggling students. She works with many different school districts mentoring educators in through various workshops and courses.

The chair is named after Chicago-area educator Mary Endres, who was one of the founders of Purdue’s elementary education program. During her 17 years at Purdue, Endres took leaves of absence to establish teacher-training programs in Nigeria and Pakistan, as well as parent and early childhood programs in African American communities in Mississippi, Georgia, Indiana, and Ohio in the 1960s.
