College of Education graduate student Erin Rondeau-Madrid receives Above and Beyond Award

Erin Rondeau-Madrid, doctoral candidate in the Department of Curriculum Studies in the College of Education at Purdue University, was recently presented with the Purdue Graduate Student Government (PGSG)  Above and Beyond award for the 2020-2021 academic year. This award recognizes commitment to PGSG and outstanding service to the Purdue graduate student community. As a PGSG senator for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction last year, Erin was an integral member of PGSG’s Life Committee which coordinated two Purdue Mental Health Action Weeks in both the fall and spring semesters.

As a senator, Erin represented her fellow students in the department by creating and voting on legislation concerning the graduate student body. During her tenure, she had the opportunity to help the Life Team, a PGSG committee and coordinate PGSG’s Mental Health Action Week.

“This work for Mental Health Action Week is always important, but it felt especially vital last year amidst the trauma of COVID,” says Erin. The Mental Action Weeks take place during the fall and spring semesters.

Erin has lived in the U.S., Canada, and France. During her free time, she enjoys meeting with family for dinner. She also loves seasonal fall activities: festivals, hot apple cider, haunted houses, and more.

Erin is advised by Professor JoAnn Phillion, Professor of Curriculum Studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her research is centered on the equity and inclusion of students living with mental illness in grades K-16. She also has research interests in social justice and critical analysis of educational programming for teachers as it relates to this underserved population.
