Meet Josue

Josue portrait

Josue is 11 years old, and is in the 6th grade at an intermediate school in a medium sized Midwest town.  Born and raised in California, Josue spent two years in Mexico and has been living in Midwest for four years.  Since he lives in a bilingual home, he is learning both English and Spanish.  He began learning how to read and write in Spanish in Mexico.

For New Year’s Eve, his family delights in eating delicious grapes to bring in the New Year.  On the weekends, his family spends quality time together by going to the Golden Corral for a delicious dinner.

His family’s core values are to “stick together” and be respectful to one another. This is done literally, even when Josue and his brother go to the store with his mother.  After a terrible experience of being lost in the mall, Josue’s parents emphasize to Josue and his brother to always stick together to avoid future incidents.

Josue believes that these same values should be applied in school as well.  He values being responsible and being kind to others.  This even includes not saying inappropriate words to one another.

In Josue’s spare time, he enjoys playing Call of Duty on his Xbox with his younger brother.  Despite his brother’s age, Josue does admit that his brother is better than him in this game.  Another game that he enjoys playing is Minecraft, which he also teaches his brother how to play.  However, he is the master in house building on this video game.

He said that mathematics was quite challenging in Mexico because he didn’t know math words in Spanish.  Josue compares his experience with his school in Mexico and believes that his teachers spoke too quickly because they were speaking Spanish.  However, he feels that his teachers in his current school in the Midwest speak English at a pace that easier for him to understand.

Josue receives daily ESL instruction through a pull-out program taught by a certified ESL teacher. He receives his instruction in a small group with 6 students at the intermediate to advanced levels of English proficiency. His official English proficiency level is 3.5 (WIDA).
