Dean Marchand-Martella: Changing the World

Get to know the newly appointed Suzi and Dale Gallagher Dean of Education, Nancy Marchand-Martella, and learn where she plans to take Purdue University’s College of Education.

Dean Marchand-Martella describes the importance of the role of the College of Education, stating “… we conduct high quality research at a research-intensive university, we publish in high impact journals” and more. In her words, doing so brings notoriety and money to the university, allowing graduate students to have assistantships, making a difference in the lives of students across Indiana and beyond.

To students thinking of becoming a teacher, Dean Marchand-Martella has this to say to you,
“… If you are the type of person who wants to make a difference in the lives of others … one student at a time, then you need to become an educator,”

Another aspect the dean touches upon is future goals for the College of Education. First and foremost, she wants to increase visibility for the college. Purdue is known for its STEM programs; however, Dean Marchand-Martella would like to emphasize that Purdue also has a great College of Education program that does amazing research. The second goal that is mentioned is ensuring that graduates from the college of education have the appropriate skill set to be successful in their future. A few examples of these skills are behavior management, effective instruction, and content area background.

Our newly appointed dean concludes by citing a quote from John Purdue,
“Education [is] the flame that [lights] the world.”
