Six College of Education faculty members honored at Purdue’s Celebration of Teaching Excellence

Jennifer Richardson receives a Teaching Academy Teaching Excellence Award from Jay T. Akridge, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Diversity

The Purdue University Office of the Provost formally recognized outstanding faculty at a ceremony on Sept. 27, including six College of Education faculty members.

They are:

Virak Chan, clinical assistant professor of literacy and language, Curriculum & Instruction, Teaching for Tomorrow Fellow
Chan’s research and publication is in the area of language and education policies and practices for linguistically and culturally diverse students, teacher development, bilingual education, and linguistic landscape.

Signe Kastberg, Mary Endres Chair in Elementary Education and professor of Mathematics Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Teaching for Tomorrow Fellow
Kastberg explores and contributes to public understanding of mathematics teaching and learning and mathematics teacher education. Dr. Kastberg’s discovery, learning, and engagement activities are undertaken to develop and contribute to understandings of the beauty and complexity of teaching, learning, and learning to teach mathematics-learners.

Laura Bofferding, associate professor of Mathematics Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Teaching for Tomorrow Fellow
Bofferding’s research interests include: Pre-K and elementary students’ cognitive development and understanding of mathematics; children’s understanding of negative numbers; use of games and contrasting cases to support children’s numerical understanding; the interplay between teachers’ use of questioning, number talks, and students’ mathematical reasoning; and teachers’ use of assessment to inform mathematics instruction Sequencing of mathematical topics.

Christy Wessel Powell, assistant professor of language, literacy, and education, Curriculum & Instruction, Teaching Leadership Award
Wessel Powell’s scholarship focuses on literacy and equity. Her research is rooted in a commitment to understanding and enacting equity in classrooms and communities, through literacy. This scholarship focuses on two intersecting strands of inquiry: (1) elementary literacy, especially justice-focused literacy teacher education; and (2) equity advocacy, particularly the intersections of education reform, media and advocacy.

Richardson’s research focuses on distance education, particularly online learning environments, and includes social aspects of online learning and strategies that not only enhance the learning environment for students, but also make it more efficient and effective for instructors.

Jason Ware, clinical associate professor and director of Engagement Scholar Development, Honors, courtesy appointment of College of Education), Exceptional Early Career Award, Service Learning Award
Ware’s engagement focuses on working with city officials, non-profit organizations, and local residents, all within the city of Lafayette, Indiana, to measure and impact positively community well-being and quality-of-life.
