Teacher Education Program

Admission to the Purdue University Teacher Education Program (TEP), at the undergraduate level and graduate postbaccalaureate level, is a distinct and unique admission process, separate from admission to Purdue University. These are the required steps:

Specific programs may have additional admission requirements/criteria, each of which is stated in the TEP Brightspace Course under catalog admission year and licensure program title.

Pre-Teacher Education (TEP) Admission

Welcome to Teacher Education at Purdue University!

Before being accepted into the Teacher Education Program (TEP), Teacher Education (TE) students will:

  • Subscribe to and self-monitor their TEP requirements and progression via the TE Brightspace Course (Teacher Education Program Guidelines, Requirements, & Resources)
  • Verify program progress with an Academic Advisor each semester, and
  • Seek support from program faculty members as needed

A

Milestone A: Admission to TEP

Determination equals success!

To arrive at and advance through Milestone A – Admission to the TEP, TE students must:

  • Finish Teacher Education Foundation courses
  • Complete all Professional Education courses with a grade of “C” or higher [no “I” (Incomplete) grade, no “Pass/Fail”]
  • Satisfy all program specific GPA requirements, and
  • Complete and submit the appropriate TEP Application during the second semester of their sophomore year (TSAP and transfer students will work closely with their Academic Advisor to determine when admission to TEP is necessary)

Applications must be received by December 1st for Spring admission, and July 1st for Fall admission.

In collaboration with their Academic Advisor, admitted TE students will continue to self-monitor their completion of program requirements and successful progression as outlined in Pre-Teacher Education (TEP) Admission (above).

Milestone B: Student Teaching Placement

Keep striving!

To qualify for and receive a Student Teaching Placement (Milestone B), students must gain admission to TEP (Milestone A), register and successfully complete the mandatory student teaching Clinical Acceptance Process (CAP) Workshop guided by the Office of Clinical Practice (OCP) 12 months BEFORE Student Teaching Placement.

In collaboration with their Academic Advisor, TE students advancing through Milestone B will continue to self-monitor their completion of program requirements and successful progression in the manner previously outlined (see Under Pre-Teacher Education (TEP) Admission).

Milestone C: Student Teaching Entrance

Way to persevere!

To be eligible to enter Student Teaching (Milestone C), TE students are to have met Milestones A, B, and C. To qualify for Milestone C, TE students must

  • Complete all Professional Education courses with a grade of “C” or higher, no “I” (Incomplete) grade, no “Pass/Fail”,
  • Satisfy all program-specific GPA requirements, and
  • Attempt all required specific licensure (content) test(s) before the Student Teaching semester. An official score report must be on file with OTEL by December 1st for Spring Student Teaching and July 1st for Fall Student Teaching.

In collaboration with their Academic Advisor, TE students advancing through Milestone C will continue to self-monitor their completion of program requirements and successful progression in the manner previously outlined (see Under Pre-Teacher Education (TEP) Admission).

Milestone D: TEP Completion

Congratulations Graduate!

To achieve Milestone D and become an official Purdue alumnus, TE students must:

  • Complete all Professional Education courses with a grade of “C” or higher, no “I” (Incomplete) grade, no “Pass/Fail”,
  • Satisfy all program-specific GPA requirements
  • Meet performance assessments as defined by program faculty, and
  • Receive degree conferral on their academic transcript

Milestone E: Licensure Eligibility

Following graduation from Purdue and having completed TEP, to qualify for an Initial Indiana Instructional License, TE students must

Milestone F: Licensure Application and Recommendation

Look at all you have accomplished!

Upon meeting program-specific requirements for licensure, TE students will submit an Indiana License Application online with the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) via the Licensing Verification and Information System (LVIS). Upon submission, Licensing Advisors in the Office of Teacher Education and Licensure (OTEL) will verify successful program completion and recommend to the IDOE that an Indiana Instructional License be granted.
