Meet Zoey

Zoey is 5 years old and is a Kindergarten student in a large urban elementary school in a major Midwest city. Her father was born in Puerto Rico, and her mother is from Mexico. Zoey was born in Indiana. Zoey has one older brother who is eight years old, and a younger brother who is four years old.

Both parents speak English well, and use both Spanish and English at home. Her father once played for major league baseball team, and now works as a manager of a sporting goods store. Her mother works as a cashier. Zoey enjoys school. She likes to read books about Barbie and ponies, and loves to build houses with blocks in her classroom.

At school Zoey receives sheltered English content-area instruction in her classroom and receives 30 minutes of daily ESL instruction through a pull-out program with a certified ESL teacher. Her classroom teacher has also recently completed licensure in working with ELL students. Zoey’s’ official English language proficiency level is 5 (WIDA).

At home Zoey likes to play family with her little brother. She plays mom, and her brother plays baby by crawling on the ground, and she pretends to feed him a bottle. Her favorite TV shows are PowerRangers and Peppa Pig.
