About Assessment Tools ELL Language Portraits

Overview

Welcome to the Purdue English Language Learner Language Portraits (Purdue ELLLPs)! The purpose of this site is to provide pre-service and in-service teachers and administrators with resources and tools to practice assessing the English language proficiency of English language learners (ELLs), and analyzing the results to inform effective language and content-area instruction.

A “language portrait” for each of the ELLs featured on this site includes a brief introduction and the following language samples in the domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing:

Oral Language (Listening & Speaking)

A video excerpt of an oral presentation
A video excerpt of an interview

Literacy (Reading & Writing)

A video excerpt of a read aloud of one or more texts
Students’ answers to reading comprehension questions for each text
One or more writing samples (unedited)

The following tools are provided for users to assess and analyze the students’ English language proficiency. These forms may be downloaded, completed, and saved or printed:

Student Oral Language Observation Matrix-Revised (SOLOM-R) and Evaluation Form
Analytic Writing Rubric and Evaluation Form
Running Record and Evaluation Form (reading assessment)

A set of completed forms (answer keys) will be provided for users to compare their assessment results and evaluations.

Users are also welcomed to use rubrics, tools, or forms that are used within their own schools and states to assess ELL students’ English language proficiency.

Student Anonymity

All students featured in the Purdue ELLLPs are real ELLs. However, to help protect and maintain student anonymity, names have been changed, school and district names are not used, and some minor details about the students have been changed.

The Purdue ELLLPs is made possible through the support of the English Language Learning (ELL) program and the Learning Design and Technology (LDT) program in the Department of Curriculum & Instructions in the College of Education at Purdue University.

Ongoing Development

The Purdue ELLLPs will continue to grow as additional ELL Language Portraits are collected and added to the site. We hope to build up this site to be inclusive of the wide diversity of ELLs in terms of gender, age, grade level, English language proficiency level, ethnicities, and home languages, as well as different types of ELLs including newcomers, long-term ELLs, students with interrupted formal education (SIFE), refugee students, gifted and talented, special education, international exchange students, etc. We also plan on providing video examples of effective instruction with ELLs.
