Dean Phil VanFossen surrounded by seven of his colleagues.
Congratulations to our new Suzi and Dale Gallagher Dean of Education, Phillip J. VanFossen! Phil served nearly four years as our interim dean so we are thrilled that his tireless efforts have been rewarded in this way.

Message from the Dean

Greetings!! I am delighted to share with you the latest issue of our e-magazine Boilermaker Educator. It has been a very busy year, and this issue has quite a few stories that are worth checking out. Particularly, I would encourage you to view the video highlighting recent alum Hayden Peffer (Elementary Ed ’24) and also to explore our  2025 Year in Review—both are examples of the kinds of things that make the College ‘quinoa in a field of wheat.’

Finally, the College had another successful Purdue Day of Giving: for the second year in a row we again won the Faculty/Staff Challenge (despite the College having less than 2% of the faculty/staff at Purdue)! While we didn’t break our 2025 record for the number of gifts given, we ranked well above our size compared to larger units across campus. Thank you all for your continued support. Boiler Up and Hammer Down!

Greg Butler (BA Elementary Education and Teaching ’03), principal at Metropolitan School District of Warren Township

“I graduated from Purdue University in December 2003 and immediately began putting my Boilermaker preparation to work,” said Butler. “I student-taught at my old elementary school, Hawthorne Elementary, that fall, and in the spring of 2004 I returned as Hawthorne’s building substitute. Later that same spring, I earned my first full-time teaching contract for the 2004–2005 school year. I spent the next ten years teaching at Hawthorne, pouring into students and families every day. During the summers, I worked throughout the city in a wide range of programs—from early-childhood camps to night school.”

“I’ve taught learners as young as two and as seasoned as 81. Those experiences shaped my leadership and deepened my belief in the power of serving others. After a decade in the classroom, I spent two years as the assistant principal at Brookview Elementary in Warren Township. In 2015, I returned home to Hawthorne as principal, and I have proudly served this community for the last ten years.”

“Boilermakers are doing big things—and I’m proud to represent Purdue by leading, serving, and championing students every single day.”

New Look

We have a new look in “our home” of Beering Hall – sleek new elevator wraps that highlight our College on the main floor and basement. We’re planning to create some more elevator wraps for floors 3, 4, and 5 this summer.
