Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning in STEM
CATALYST
The Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM (CATALYST) is an interdisciplinary research-oriented center that is jointly sponsored by the College of Education and the College of Science. Our focus is on building and supporting a community of educational professionals who are dedicated to advancing K-12 STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teaching and learning. We seek to use our work to inform policy and public support of STEM teaching and learning at the local, national, and global levels.
Center for Literacy and Language Education and Research
CL2EAR
The newly relaunched Center for Literacy and Language Education and Research (CL2EAR) commits to enhancing the overall quality of literacy and language instruction for PK-12 students through its research, policy transformation, and high-quality teacher development. As part of the Purdue University College of Education (COE), the Center will “advance sustainable and inclusive learning communities through high-impact scholarship, inspirational teaching, vision-driven service, and collaborative community engagement” specific to literacy and language education (from the COE strategic plan Mission, 2021).

Ackerman Center
The James F. Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship has programs and resources for K-12 and community educators to implement powerful citizenship education that promotes active involvement in schools and communities.
Purdue Center for Serious Games and Learning in Virtual Environments
Serious Gaming Center
The mission of the Serious Gaming Center is to provide support for implementing, designing and developing serious games and virtual environments for learning; to encourage collaboration across Purdue and with K-12 schools; and, to establish a foundation for securing funding and conducting research at Purdue on the use of serious games and virtual learning environments in education.

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)
Indiana GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is designed to increase the number of K-12 students who are exceptionally prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
Meet the Department Head
Dr. S. Selcen Guzey
Selcen Guzey is the Department Head of Curriculum and Instruction and a professor in the Science Education and Curriculum and Instruction programs. She also serves as the Associate Director of Research Initiatives for the Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM (CATALYST).
Guzey’s research interests include integrated STEM education and technology integration in biology teaching and learning. Her most recent research projects include a large scale, longitudinal study of engineering design and practices in K-12 science classes and a study of student discourse in collaborative engineering design groups in elementary and secondary classrooms.
