Purdue Counseling and Guidance Center

The Counseling and Guidance Center is the counseling service and training facility for the College of Education on the Purdue University campus. Since 1953, the Counseling and Guidance Center has been assisting people with a variety of educational, career, and personal problems. Current staff members are qualified graduate counseling psychology students in-training who are supervised by faculty from the Counseling Psychology Program. The Counseling Psychology program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychology Association (APA), 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002, (202) 336-5979.

All counselors are well prepared for this work and are completing requirements for a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology.

Services

We provide individual and group counseling services to Purdue University students and staff and to adults in the community at-large. Individuals come to the Center seeking personal growth as well as assistance with a variety of career and personal concerns including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • School, academic, and learning concerns
  • Loneliness
  • Stress
  • Grief & Loss
  • Communication building skills
  • Career and educational planning
  • Stress management
  • Life changes
  • Identity
  • Self-esteem building
  • Coping skills
  • Anger management

The Counseling and Guidance Clinic is currently offering two groups:

  • Anxiety and Stress Group
  • College Adjustment Group

The Counseling and Guidance Center serves those whose concerns and problems are not of a magnitude that prevents them from meeting daily responsibilities and those who are not in crisis. We do not provide psychiatric or medical service, nor can we serve those individuals with severe psychological disorders. If due to being a training clinic we are unable to meet the needs of a client, we will provide appropriate referrals to community agencies.

Appointments

Regular appointments are arranged between the client and the assigned counselor. At the end of each Academic Year, counselor assignments may change. If additional counseling is needed, the counselor will make arrangements to transfer the client to another counselor or refer to an appropriate agency.

Counseling sessions are generally 45-50 minutes and typically occur weekly depending on the needs of the client.

Eligibility

The Counseling and Guidance Center provides services to the general public, including Purdue students, faculty, staff, and their families. Clients do not need to be affiliated with Purdue and physician referrals are typically not required. We do not provide counseling services to children and adolescents. We do not provide couples counseling.

Fees

The Counseling and Guidance Center strives to make counseling services available and affordable to the community at large. There is no charge for either the individual counseling services, group counseling services, tests, or inventories that might be administered as part of the counseling process.

Scheduling an Appointment

To schedule an appointment, please call the Counseling and Guidance Center at (765) 494-9738 or email us at pcgc@purdue.edu. When you call or email the center, you will speak to the clinic coordinator, who will provide you with the needed information to schedule a phone screening with our Graduate Director.

Phone screenings take approximately 15-20 minutes and are used to help us understand your needs and determine our ability to meet your needs. If the Counseling and Guidance Center is determined to be a good fit for you, then you will be scheduled for an intake appointment with one of our counselors.
