The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) named Breanya Hogue to its Emerging Leaders of Color Fellowship (ELoC) Cohort 3.

Hogue, assistant professor of language and literacy in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, also directs the Purdue CDF Freedom School Program-FUMC, a program of the College of Education’s Center for Literacy and Language Education and Research (CL2EAR).

She will join other fellows in this program, which is designed to help them expand their leadership skills and community networks required to lead and grow effective youth-serving organizations.

“I joined the ELoC fellowship program in hopes of gaining more resources and tools to continue to develop my community-engaged youth and family work,” said Hogue. “I wanted the opportunity to network with other youth workers across the state to collaborate about state and regional issues and topics.”

The cohort will meet monthly in Indianapolis through June 2026 and will give participants opportunities to engage in transformative learning experiences, connect with mentors and peers, and gain valuable leadership skills.

Besides directing the Purdue CDF Freedom School Program, Hogue teaches undergraduate early K-2 literacy methods and instruction, and graduate courses focused on literacy foundations, coaching, and advanced qualitative inquiry. Her research interests include pre-service teacher urban education, communities of practice, community and family engaged practices, children’s literature, culturally responsive and proactive pedagogies, and critical literacy.

“Your passion and dedication to the youth development sector are both inspiring and essential,” said Yalonda Brown, senior manager of the IYI’s Youth Worker Well-Being Project. “Your voice and perspective are vital in shaping a more representative and innovative future for our profession. We are excited to walk alongside you as you take this next step in your leadership journey.”
