Reading Hall of Fame inducts Kuhn as its first Purdue faculty member

Melanie Kuhn

Melanie Kuhn is the first Purdue University faculty member to be inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame, one of the highest honors in the field of reading education. This prestigious platform shapes reading education and helps make reading accessible for learners of all ages, advancing reading education worldwide.

Kuhn, the Jean Adamson Stanley Faculty Chair in Literacy in the College of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to literacy research, including her foundational work in the development of reading fluency.

Her portfolio includes five influential books, 40+ peer-reviewed articles, and more than 50 book chapters strategically placed in prestigious outlets, including the Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Educational Psychology, and the Oxford Handbook of Educational Psychology. Her articles have frequently been reprinted in foundational collections such as Theoretical Models and Processes and have been extensively cited (over 8,200 times), attesting to their enduring influence.

Kuhn has received federal grants to implement and evaluate Fluency Oriented Reading Instruction (FORI) to determine its effectiveness, and a Spencer Foundation grant considering the relationship between fluency and challenging social studies text.

Her many honors include the Literacy Research Association (LRA) Early Career Achievement Award, election to the LRA Board of Directors, and appointment as a member of the Literacy Research Panel for the International Literacy Association. She is currently the moderator for The Reading Forum, a website that exemplifies her commitment to making research accessible to stakeholders.

“Being inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame is a true honor,” said Kuhn. “For my peers to recognize my work in this way indicates the influence my research on reading fluency has had on the field of literacy learning.”
