The national College Board organization, founders of the SAT® and AP® programs, invited the Purdue Center for Rural Research, Education, and Outreach to present a workshop at several venues in Indiana in September.

Jennifer Barce, executive director of the Center, presented on both Sept. 23 in New Castle, IN, and Sept. 25, in Lafayette, IN. The Center is part of the Purdue University College of Education.

The title of the workshop was “Empowering Indiana’s Future: College Board Pathways to Success.” The focus of the workshop was to assist Indiana educators in meeting the new degree pathway requirements and providing increased access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses for rural students.

Barce’s presentation happened during the day’s focus on Rural School Supports and Industry Partners. She shared the Center’s focus on rural college access and success, highlighting the teacher pipeline program offered by the College of Education.

“The Teacher Pipeline Program is our work with rural schools help aspiring early high school students to enroll in Purdue for teacher education then return home to their rural communities for student teaching and likely employment,” Barce said.

About 40 people attended each session, including people from College Board, AP® educators, higher education and industry partners, and rural school resource organizations such as the Indiana Small and Rural School Association, and the Rural Early College Network.

“As a result of these workshops, I hope that attendees will return to their organizations with new ideas about increasing college access for their rural students through Advanced Placement, rural community support, and best practices in-college counseling,” Barce said.
