Profile
Dr. Breanya Hogue is an Assistant Professor of Literacy and Language Education in the department of Curriculum & Instruction within the College of Education at Purdue University. She currently teaches undergraduate early K-2 literacy methods and instruction, and graduate courses focused on literacy foundations, coaching, and advanced qualitative inquiry. Her research interests include pre-service teacher urban education, communities of practice, community and family engaged practices, diverse children’s literature, culturally responsive and proactive pedagogies, and critical literacy.
She began her public education profession as a 5th grade elementary teacher in Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to and following her formal teaching career, Breanya served nationally with the Children's Defense Fund's Freedom Schools® Program. Breanya accredits the Freedom School program for equipping her with the essential tools and experience to effectively work with children, families, and communities. She recently founded and serves as the Executive Director of the Purdue CDF Freedom School Program at First United Methodist Church, which is an intentional university-church partnership which provides engagement and training opportunities for students, families, and community members.
Breanya holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Literacy, Culture, & Language Education from Indiana University and a Master of Education in School Counseling (K-12) from the University of Louisville, which is where she also earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Elementary Education (K-5). She has published her academic work in a number of journals including Journal of Children’s Literature, Studying Teacher Education, Literacy UKLA, Black Educology, and more. Additionally, she has published children’s books over the years based on her early teaching experiences and interactions with youth as well as memories from her own childhood.
