Dr. Bill Cope and Dr. Mary Kalantzis, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
“Generative AI: Implications and Applications for Education”
Both Professors Cope and Kalantzis have been at the forefront of digital education, developing innovative online tools that are transforming how we approach learning with the use of Generative AI. Since early 2023, Cope and Kalantzis have been addressing these challenges in K-12 and higher education, notably through the Cyber Scholar workspace. Cyber Scholar serves as a versatile platform designed to empower educators by allowing them to customize an AI system tailored specifically to the dynamics of their classrooms. In this presentation, they will explore Generative AI from a linguistic-semantic perspective, viewing it as a paradigm shift beyond traditional AI models. They will conclude by reexamining the concept of AI as merely an artificial replication of human intelligence, proposing instead a model of “cyber-social intelligence” that fosters a new paradigm of “cyber-social learning.” While Generative AI will not replace teachers, it will fundamentally transform their roles.
