Profile

Dr. Brenda Sarmiento Quezada is an Assistant Professor of Literacy and Language Education at Purdue University. Her research focuses on the integration of language and literacy within emergent bilingual and linguistically diverse populations. She examines literacy integration in mathematics education, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and pre-service teacher preparation. Her scholarship explores translanguaging, bilingual teacher education, and family multiliteracies, with work published in the International Journal of Multicultural Education and in edited collections on mathematics instruction, refugee education, and global language policy. She also leads El Rincón Bilingüe, a community-engaged initiative fostering biliteracy and mathematics learning in partnership with local libraries, and serves as President (Faculty) of the Latino Faculty and Staff Association (LaFaSA) at Purdue.

Research & Publications

Dr. Sarmiento Quezada’s research examines how emergent bilingual children and families engage with mathematics and language across home, school, and community spaces. Her work focuses on translanguaging pedagogy, bilingual teacher preparation, family multiliteracies, and the design of culturally sustaining, bilingual learning tools. She is particularly interested in how storytelling and everyday family practices can support early mathematics learning, with a current project exploring bilingual AI tools for early childhood education.
