Counseling and Development

The PhD program in Counseling Psychology has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 2002. Following a scientist-practitioner model of training, the program prepares students for careers as practicing psychologists and professors in colleges and universities: 

• Using an apprenticeship approach, students receive dedicated mentorship and research experience as a member of a core faculty member’s research team.  
• Through experiential and didactic coursework and providing individual and group therapeutic services to clients in the program’s in-house clinic and in practice in the Greater Lafayette area, students become competent practitioners.  
• During the last year of study, students complete a full-time clinical internship through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) match process.  
• All of the training is guided by our program’s values, which emphasize social justice and an appreciation for diversity. 

The 12-credit (4 course) Graduate Certificate in Applied Helping Skills prepares students with skills that will allow them to effectively communicate and interact with people in personal and professional contexts. In particular, after completing the certificate, graduates will: 

• Effectively interact with others 
• Enhance their communication, helping skills, and leadership abilities 
• Explore how their skills can be applied to vocational settings and interpersonal interactions.
